How to Choose an ISP: Your Budget
When it comes to selecting an ISP, the amount of money that
you can afford to spend on an ISP is a very important consideration.
Through this article, we will discuss with you your need for
an ISP and your budget.
A Wide Spectrum of Prices are Available
There are many concerns to choosing an ISP, and what you
can afford should be a major concern. There are many price
levels available, and range from free to very expensive. And
although your budget is an important consideration, remember
that you don’t want to have to buy a new computer because
your ISP didn’t provide protection from hackers and viruses.
What About Free Internet Service Providers?
Free internet is simply a short-term dial up access. Many
companies offer free internet access, but limit the time to
around 10 hours per month. Anything over the 10 hours is charged
by the minute or the hour. This means that if they charge
$10 for every hour you go over, you would probably be charged
$10 for going over five minutes. Make sure you talk to them
and find out how this is handled before signing up for a free
service. Most of these services also allow popups, banners,
and no spam or virus protection and offer no email service.
In one way or another, you will pay for the service so you
might as well pay for something good.
What About Cheap Internet Service Providers?
Cheap internet services run from $1 to around $10 per month,
and offer a little more protection. Again a lot of these services
are dial-up so they will be slow. But because hackers generally
don’t like the speed of dial-up connections, often people
who use this method are less likely to be attacked. Some cheap
sites offer email service as well, and some also limit the
time you can use the service.
The Problems with Dial Up
With both the cheap and free services, remember that it’s
dial-up and you may get busy signals during peak hours. Technical
support is sometimes nonexistent, or if the ISP does have
it they sometimes charge by the minute for calls. What use
is your internet connection if you can’t access it? However,
if all you use your computer for is email and a little surfing—and
your budget is small—cheap with virus protection would still
be better than free without it.
The Benefits of Broadband Service
If you have a business or are a large volume home user, you
will probably be looking at an ISP that offers broadband service.
This service does not need to be expensive, although there
are services that offer a great deal of perks that a constant
user may need. Broadband services will also involve some cash
outlay for equipment, so add that into your costs as well.
Because your system would be open to the internet 24/7, you
may want to spend a little more on protection from spam and
hackers.
