How to Choose an ISP: Where are You Going to Use the Internet?

Trying to find the perfect ISP can be a challenging task. The task is further complicated when you are required to access the Net from different locations. This article is designed to provide you with information to help you find an ISP based on how and where you will be using the Internet into the future.

Are You a Traveling Person?

These are times when you can use your computer almost anywhere at any time. Traveling is not much of a concern anymore, as most hotels and motels provide wireless connections at no charge for their residents. Education institutions provide connections all over campus, as well as computer labs strictly for students without a computer or who need access immediately and can’t go get a computer left home or in a dorm room.

However, there are still some places where the internet is still difficult to access. If you’re traveling there may be places where you are limited to dial-up connections. In hotels and motels, make sure you know if there will be charges for calling out. Be prepared with pay-as-you-go service if your own home provider doesn’t offer free dial-up minutes. If you use a free internet dial-up service, be very aware of the restrictions on time.

Internet Access When You are a Guest in Someone's Home

If you are a guest in someone’s home and need to use dial-up, remember that you will be occupying a phone line and they will not be able to use their telephone as long as you are connected to the internet. Regardless of how many hours you have available on your pay-as-you-go service or adjunct service to your home ISP provisions, be considerate and limit your times to when they don’t need the phone or are not home. If you must use it during peak calling hours, curtail your use.

Internet Access When You are in a Hotel or Motel

Hotels and motels aren’t the only places that provide connections for customers. There are coffee shops with both wireless and dialup plugs, and some restaurants that serve in business districts. Even auto repair shops and other stores where waiting is commonplace offer connections for their customers.

You can also use the internet from come game consoles. A wireless connection is required, and some handheld games with keyboards allow you to send text messages and even log onto the internet.

The Local Library

And even if you don’t have a computer yourself, you can still access the internet! Libraries often have a number of computers with internet access available for patrons. All you need is a library card for that particular district or from a district that has an agreement with the one where you wish to use the computers. So it doesn’t matter where you go or even if you have a computer with you—you can find a way to get on the internet with a little resourcefulness.
