How to Choose an ISP: Service Contract
Cost is an importan factor when you are looking for an ISP
and Internet access. To this end, it is very important for
you to understand and appreciate what is included in a service
contract before you sign on the dotted line. This article
provides you with some basic information in regard to the
importance of the service contract when you are looking for
an Internet Service Provider.
A Comprehensive Document
Your ISP service contract should be the one document that
tells you exactly what you are getting for your money and
what to expect from your provider. You are advised to read
this thoroughly and understand the terms of service before
you agree to the commitment.
Your service agreement should tell you whether you are responsible
for equipment, toll charges, telephone access charges, etc.
Anything the company won’t cover for you should be mentioned.
If you suspect something’s been left out, contact the company
so you don’t end up with a surprise charge.
The Length of Time Your Service Contract Will be in Effect
Remember that as you contract their services for a longer
period of time, the price will drop. However, remember that
prices on some services fall anyway, such as that of DSL,
so you may not want to lock into a higher price for very long.
Most experienced users don’t agree to contracts longer than
a year or two, and even two could be too much for your particular
needs.
What to Look for in a Service Contract
If you wish to use servers, make sure it’s allowed under
your contract. Also make sure your service will host web pages
for you if you need this service.
Charges, late payment fees, and any other fees the customer
is responsible for paying should be clear in the service contract.
Again, if you think something is not covered, call customer
service for an explanation. Cancellation conditions should
also be outlined in your ISP service contract. Make sure you
know what could happen if you cancel early, or if you move.
The Future and Your Service Contract
This is all great, but what happens if the ISP merges with
another? This happens often, even with the large ISPs, and
the results can impact your services and charges. If your
contract is about to expire, and you suspect change is in
the wind for your ISP, consider renegotiating it.
First, tell the company you want to renegotiate and to make
sure it will be honored if they are merging with another provider.
If you need to call the company your ISP is merging with in
order to find out, do so. Get it in writing in your next service
contract.
Second, make sure you know if the charges are going to increase
for your service. If they are and you think it’s too expensive,
shop around for a new service and contract. If not, see if
you can lock in a lower price as a loyal customer.
