What is an Internet Service Provider?

So you bought a computer you’re happy with, decided between narrowband and broadband Internet access, and you’re ready to surf the ’net. Well, before you can even put your toe in the vast ocean of the world wide web, you need to pay someone to give you access to it. This will become your Internet Service Provider, or ISP. With that in mind, you may be wondering what, exactly does an Internet Service Provider or ISP actuall do for you when it comes to the Internet

Understanding an ISP

An ISP provides connections to the internet by leasing connections from larger providers known as Internet backbone providers. ISPs have equipment that make it possible for you to communicate with the Internet. They have lines necessary to have an Internet point-of-presence for your area. A point-of-presence is like an airport—just like you would go to the airport to get on high-speed flights all over the world, you access the world of Internet through an ISP.

Choosing an ISP -- The Sky's the Limit

There are a dizzying number of ISPs to choose from. Some ISPs are smaller local companies, and others are region or even national, like MCI’s Internet service. What you will actually need from your ISP will determine what provider you choose. Remember that larger Internet access providers, such as AT&T WorldNet and Netcom, sometimes own high-speed lines and are less dependent on local telecommunications. Through agreements with other large ISPs they are often able to offer better Internet service to their customers. However, make sure you are not paying for services you don’t need—a small company might suit your needs better.

ISP Plans -- Access or Access and Space

Some ISPs offer only access, while others offer space for their customers’ own web pages. If you are considering building your own presence on the Internet, consider subscribing to a service that would offer you space for your web pages. Some services offer it as an a la carte item; you could go with the basic service until you have your web page ready to load, then change your subscription to include this capability. If the ISP offers website hosting free, then you don’t have to be concerned with this process.

Make Sure the Price is Right ... For You

Above all make sure the price is right for you. If a certain ISP has exactly what you need from your ISP but is too expensive, make sure the company isn’t including things you don’t need. If they are, see if they have more basic packages available that will suit you, or keep shopping if they don’t.
