Cable Versus DSL: Which Is Better?
If you are in the process of signing up for Internet service
or changing your Internet Service Provider (or ISP), you may
be debating whether or not you should opt for cable or opt
for DSL service. Through this article you will be presented
with information about both types of service to aid you in
determining whether cable or whether DSL is right for you.
Two Major Broadband Connections
Cable and DSL are the two main internet connections in the
category of broadband, narrowband being the dial-up connection.
Although they aren’t always available in rural areas, most
people prefer these connections for their speed, reliability,
and flat rate.
Both have advantages and disadvantages, although the biggest
disadvantage for both of them is that the internet connection
is always on, and leaves their computers open to hackers and
other potential harm. Those who are concerned about security
often have a firewall and good virus protection for their
computers.
Advantages of Cable and of DSL -- There are Similarities
The advantages of DSL and cable are also much the same—both
have high speed access, both are available and on 24/7, and
you’re telephone line won’t be busy when you’re on the internet.
You pay a flat rate for these services, as opposed to by-the-minute
use. Businesspeople like the broadband internet connection
because of the speed as well as the ability to talk to clients
and be on the internet at the same time. In some businesses
this is a critical capability.
The Popularity of DSL
DSL itself is a popular choice for both home and business.
For home use, the speed and plug-and-go type installation
is attractive. DSL is now available from many sources, not
just telephone companies, and the competition has been good
for the service. Most areas now have DSL, but you need to
be near a switching site for the optimum speed. Because many
cable companies are limited to residential areas, DSL is often
the preferred connection for businesses. DSL is also easy
to install for those moderately literate in personal computers.
The Speed of Cable
However, cable is far and away faster than DSL. Internet
game players often prefer it for its speed (although you will
experience a bit of slowing when there are lots of people
in your shared area on the cable lines). Because they use
cable lines instead of telephone lines, your telephone is
free to use when you’re on the internet.
Cable and Large Amounts of Data and Information
Cable is also a good option for businesses that rely on transferring
large files. Graphic designers, for instance, would prefer
cable for its speed. A high-resolution file that a designer
may need to send to a client for approval would take much
less time going on the cables than by the phone lines, even
with DSL. Unfortunately, some urban areas don’t have cable
yet.
DSL and cable each have their advantages and disadvantages.
To choose for yourself, decide which would be best based on
your type of usage and the availability.
